Students can take their science and engineering education even further by pursuing a graduate degree in one of the many unique programs available. Graduate students can earn their master’s, MBA, doctoral degrees in an assortment of science and engineering topics, such as aviation science, systems engineering, electrical engineering, forensic sciences and biotechnology. While many of the online programs differ within science and engineering, both areas require a strong interest and knowledge of science and problem solving skills.
Depending on the area in which you major, many graduates go on to become engineers of some kind. Since there are so many different types of engineering, graduates will most likely specialize in a certain category while in school. Because engineers apply science and math principles in their every day work, they need to be well-versed in both areas and be able to develop solutions to technical problems. One specialty of engineering that online graduates may be suited to do is environmental engineering. They handle a variety of issues, including water and air pollution, recycling, waste disposal and public health issues. Environmental engineers have numerous duties, such as collecting soil or groundwater samples for contamination tests, designing municipal sewage and wastewater systems, analyzing data, researching current environmental issues and performing quality control checks. Some environmental engineers may be involved in the protection of wildlife as well. While others work as consultants, helping their clients abide by regulations to prevent environmental risks and to clean up hazardous sites. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, environmental engineers have a great deal of room to grow and advance their positions to become technical specialists or supervisor of a team of engineers and technicians. Median annual earnings for environmental engineers were $54,890 in 1999. Online engineering graduates can also look into a career as a health and safety engineer. These engineers prevent harm to people and property by using systems engineering and mechanical, chemical principles. They use the skills and knowledge learned in graduate school to identify and measure potential hazards, such as fires or handling of toxic chemicals. Some health and safety engineers work in manufacturing industries to oversee the production of new products and ensure their safety. Another career avenue for science or engineering graduate students is biotechnology. This area of science fuses engineering and technology together to form a field rich in molecular biology and medicine. There are three different areas of biotechnology: medical research and development, agricultural research and development and production. Graduates interested in working in biotechnology can choose from numerous occupations, including: Geneticist, biomedical engineer, clinical research coordinator or associate, plant breeder, animal research associate, and many more.
The job outlook for scientists and engineers is favorable, especially for those with a graduate degree. In order to advance your career and participate in certain experiments or duties, workers need to be open to continuing education. While it may not be necessary for all scientific or engineering fields, it is a good idea to earn a graduate degree to enhance your job opportunities and become more specialized and knowledgeable in your specific field of work.
